Forget route 2 and the alewife interchange, I have found the most absurd, enormous, and confusing pavement disgrace ever to set foot in these Unites States. This is a merge between THREE interstates, built around Newark airport. I-78 runs through Route 1 and I-95, creating massive interchanges at both. Route one swings around to serve EWR, with more ramp spaghetti. I-95, in off of its multi-lane glory, hits i-78 and then merges with route one south of EWR. This entire humongous complex probably cost over one billion dollars, taking as much space as all of Manhattan. There are dozens of these, and just looking at one from Google earth gives you a sense of how much space we give up cars.
